Architect: Roy Hotchkiss

I’m on another "Architect’s House" kick, so expect more postings soon. Hotchkiss is most famous for designing the 1929 Medical Arts building in Oak Park: www.flickr.com/photos/repowers/4807231232/
For a time, he apprenticed with Oak Park’s most prolific architect E.E. Roberts (sorry Frank), which explains why he worked in a number of styles. From European-style apartment buildings to stylish brick and stucco bungalows, he also designed churches in Elmhurst and Morris as well as Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at East and Randolph in Oak Park.

Again. I must go and photograph these in more detail; some of them are breathtaking. Some, though, are not well looked after at all. I’d like to live in one. As I was driving by, I saw Trevor, an ex work colleague, with his Sunday paper, walking towards them, and stopped for a chat – the normal-roofed 1930s semi on the far left is his house! Turns out he kind of rues not buying one of the art deco ones, but flat-roof paranoia put him off. The final art deco house on the left belongs to Trevor’s friend, and is in beautiful condition.

Started as a simple cabin in the mid 1700′s, enhanced to a (smaller than this) frame house in the late 1700′s, further modified to more-or-less its present form in 1871. I used to show some of my prints at a small art gallery in Galesville, Maryland, and each time I traveled there, I passed a house that was in a continual state of falling apart. I finally decided to capture an instant of its decay and print it using the Van Dyke process. Years later the house had completely collapsed and remained simply as a pile of rubble on the ground.
